Chichen Itza
I usually advise people to go to Chichen Itza it's now one of the 7 wonders of the world, it's an educational excursion for the kids, a sight you will always remember and an essential item on anyone's bucket list.
Trip includes a stop at Ik Kil Cenote; this is where the Mayan mined the limestone that they used to build Chichen-Itza, it's also a great place for a swim to cool off on your way back!
However it takes a bit of commitment; it's a day out of your vacation, the drive time and Guided tour is not for young children whom will be restless and bored, not the best terrain for strollers, it's Hot in the Summer; you're in the sun not shade most of the time and the tour might be difficult for those whom have trouble walking or standing for long periods of time.

Tulum
If you want to see a Mayan Ruin but maybe “Not That Into It“ then I suggest Tulum it's only an hour away from the villas, while it lacks the all-inspiring Mayan Pyramid of Chichen Itza, it is right on the ocean and has a quite spirituality to it. A nice day trip is a few hours at Tulum then the afternoon at Xel-Ha; the "Snorkelers Haven" which is a short drive from Tulum, you can do both and be done and back to the villa late afternoon or early evening or stop on the way back at Playa Del Carmen for dinner.

Coba and Chichen Itza
If your “All About Seeing the Mayan Ruins“ then you can combined a trip to Chichen Itza and Coba together, Coba has the tallest Mayan Pyramid in the Yucatan; although Coba is not as well known as Chichen Itza it's also not as crowded!
Coba has the feeling of a Real Mayan village located in the jungle encircled by four lakes it covers over 80 sq. miles, however only a small section has structures that have been restored for tourist. At one time it was the home to more than 45,000 Mayans and was a central hub between the coast areas and the Mayan cities in the Yucatan.

Ek Balam and BioSphere (Rio Lagartos)
Rio Lagartos is a bird Sanctuary
including pink flamingo (season is Jan. - April.)
A bird watcher Haven over 350 species of birds live here including osprey, spoonbills, ibis and herons Most of Mexico's and South America's pink flamingos migrate to the Biosphere. The United Nations (UNESO) has the area listed as one of the World Heritage Sites; its wetlands host a significant number of rare, vulnerable or endangered animal and plant species. Along with "Pink" clay baths and salt farms.
Ek Balam
Which means "Black Jaguar" in Maya
This is my favorite Mayan Ruin it's not as popular as Chichen Itza so there are few people. It's one of the only ones that you can still climb to the top and take some great photos. It's large and is still being unearth. It's surrounded by jungle this is one ruin that you feel you stepped back in time.
However this is off the beaten path it's one trip better done with a Tour than on your own.
